OAKLEY OWL'S PETANQUE TEAM.

OAKLEY OWL'S PETANQUE TEAM.

The Oakley Owl's Petanque Club was formed on the 1st April 2006 from members of the Little Oakley Social Club, with the objective to play friendly games and have some fun on Friday and Sunday evenings. RUTLAND PETANQUE LEAGUE.

Villagers Kerry Palfrey, Dave Ormshaw and myself all play for the White Horse Hunters in the Rutland petanque league. After many years playing in the premier division we dropped down into division one at the end of the 2008 season. The summer proved very difficult for the Hunters. Having to move to the new venue at Morcott after the start of the season,we lost our home advantage which meant that all but three matches had to be played on the opponent's pistes.
After a shaky start in 2009 we had a very good summer and won promotion back into the premier division. This coming season our main objective will be to stay up, but with the number of first class regional and national players joining the top clubs it's not going to be easy. It may be that we rename ourselves the "yo-yos". Hopefully playing on regular Friday and Sunday nights down "The Hut" will ensure that we gain the necessary skill to maintain our position and perhaps improve it . It won't be for the lack of trying .

COACHING AFTERNOON AT THE WILLOW.

On Saturday18th July 2009 nine petanque players from Little Oakley village attended a coaching afternoon at the Willow Leicester. We all enjoyed the session and found it very beneficial to both experienced and new players, we allways find our game improves by being coached by some of the best British Patanque Association coaches in the midlands. The team led by Richard Pratt, who last year attained his international coaching badge in Marseilles France, asissted by Tony Moulder and Lisa Edminton both first class English international players. Petanque is an amature sport and the coaches give their time free, so we each made a donation to the East Midlands Petanque Association which will be put towards equipment for junior coaching.

Petanque melee April 09 results.

The sun shone down on Little Oakley for our first ever individual petanque melee on Saturday 4th April 2009. The day went very well, with everyone both experienced and new players mixing together for an enjoyable day out. The pistes around the village provided quite a challenge, with many different surfaces and slopes, but this is village petanque played for fun and a great way to meet other players. We enjoyed Diane’s home made soup and roll at lunchtime and finished the day with fish and chips from the Oakley Chippy. Super day. We will have to have another in the autumn.
Top six players after five rounds. Points scored.
(1) Lyndon Whittaker +37. (2) Phill Day +33. (3) Ian Mabin +29.
(4)Kerry Palfrey +23. (5) Keith Lyddal +22. (6) Trish Day.+14.
